Made in Berkeley - A Short Film about Local Industry
I came across a 2006, short documentary called "Made in Berkeley". It talks about manufacturing in West Berkeley and provides some historical information, but concentrates on the adversarial relationship between residential and commercial development (which is apparently bad) and the development of artist studios and industrial sites (which are apparently good).
It kind of rubbed me the wrong way, but I'm probably just bitter because I work at one of the ominous, gentrifying, West Berkeley offices mentioned in the film. They actually show a picture of the building that housed my small, windowless office on 9th Street, while the narrator says "...then developers started turning old factories into high-end office space..." in a somber voice. Hmm... we do artistically design and build web sites. Maybe that lets me off the hook somehow. Regardless, the video presents an interesting perspective and it's only a couple of minutes long, so you should definitely check it out. The film was created by (former, Berkeley, mayoral candidate) Zelda Bronstein, Paul Shain, and Witt Monts.
